Keith Jerald Preston is the witty and articulate father of Nyla and Messina, and the ex-husband of Caresse Aldana. Many people would say he’s an amusing and entertaining conversationalist, because he’s always ready with quick and clever comebacks, and tells unlikely but convincing stories that cast him in a good light. He’s seldom embarrassed about any legal, financial or personal problems because he sees them as only temporary setbacks, the results of bad luck, unfaithful friends or an unfair and incompetent system. He often reveals a belief that the world is made up of "givers and takers," predators and prey, and that it would be very foolish not to exploit the weaknesses of others. Some of his actions are elaborate and well thought out, whereas others are quite simple: stringing along several women at the same time, or convincing family members and friends that help is needed "to bail me out of a jam." Whatever the scheme, it is carried off in a cool, self-assured, brazen manner. Keith is a functional alcoholic, so he doesn’t meet the criteria for alcohol abuse described in the psychiatric diagnostic manual. He’s a successful businessman, good father, and great friend. He watches his weight, goes to the gym. Then goes home and has four martinis or two bottles of wine. Keith’s outside accomplishments lead him and others to excuse his drinking and avoid categorizing him as an alcoholic but he’d be the first to admit success is the mask that disguises the underlying demon and feeds his denial. |
