"I didn't think it was possible for a woman to look that good. Damn, what does she see in an ugly cuss like you?"
Rick Wayne Baylor is the older brother of Infinity, and a detective for the Toms River Police Department, Criminal Investigation Bureau. His areas of expertise are Arson, Computer Crimes, Vehicle Theft, and Bias Crimes.
The time he spends cruising his sector or walking his beat is not wasted time, though it can become quite routine. During this time, the most important thing for him to do is notice the normal. He must come to know the people in his area, their habits, their automobiles and their friends. He must learn what time the various shops close, how much money is kept on hand on different nights, what lights are usually left on, which houses are vacant . . . only then can he decide what persons or cars under what circumstances warrant the appellation "suspicious".
This is what makes Rick good at his profession. He’s always noticing
the details. As far as exposure to danger is concerned, he would say policemen may be likened to soldiers. And the high degree of occupational solidarity would support that belief.
In relationships, Rick seeks to overcome his feelings of isolation by concealing his police identity. He tries not to bring his work into his social life. Now, don't get it wrong, he likes the men he works with, but thinks it’s better that his family doesn’t become a ‘police family’. He works hard to put his detective work into the background, and try not to let women know he carries a badge. Because once he does, he can’t have normal relations with them.
He’s come along way from being the handsome teenage DJ of Toms River High School South but he still has a way to go.
