“I’m very thankful for everything you did to keep me sane but I wasn’t being completely honest... There were problems I didn’t know how to admit to anyone, including myself.”
Bio Dr. Sofìa Barea-Vega is a survivor. She passed through seven foster homes and never found the ''stability, love and affection'' that a foster home is supposed to provide. Instead, she was an unpaid baby sitter and an unpaid housekeeper to some families that were loving and some that were not. Her experiences in foster care continue to shape her outlook on relationships with friends, family, and co-workers, to her religious beliefs.
She has nightmares that she never speaks about of being taken away from her birth mother at age four without understanding why.
She learned at an early age that some foster parents take children in for a variety of reasons and to rely on her wits to help her stay safe. Sofìa knew that education would be the key to her freedom and it’s because of that drive she was accepted on an academic scholarship to the University of Florida. It was there that she met Laila Sheridan and Marina Carter, two women that taught her that sisters don’t have to be blood related.
Today, she’s one of the best trauma doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She’s married a famous sports broadcaster and seems to have a Cinderella-type of life but her inner demons keep testing her relationships and her peace of mind.
