Be a Web Savvy Aspiring Author
I think of writing as the job I love to do whether I’m being paid or not. I love the way it challenges me to produce a story that evokes emotion and reader involvement. When I was a teen I used books to escape some harsh life realities and awaken my intellect so today I find myself wanting to give that gift to others. Writing has become a labor of love in the purest sense. It’s the reason I write everyday, connect to my fans through social networks and take the time to learn from industry veterans.
I guess that’s the reason I finally took a stab at creating my own book trailer. Book trailers are cool to watch, whether they are made by award-winning Circle of Seven (COS) Productions or pieced together for free by a novice, all it takes is time, creativity and a desire to spark a reader’s interest.
Now I want to warn you up front that I proudly hail from the new school of author writing, branding and marketing so please don’t send me hate mail if you see no value in creating a following before a book is published. For me, a book trailer for a yet-to-be-published book tells potential publishers that I understand the importance of actively promoting my work and I’m ready on the publicity front.
Please note: I’m not saying, not having a web presence is going to keep your amazing novel out of the hands of agents, publishers and the buying public. Not by any means. But let’s face it, once you have the agent and the book contract your web presence will be high on your list of priorities. So there’s nothing wrong with securing your web domain name and creating a twitter account in the interim.
Now back to my latest achievement, creating my first book trailer. Much like a movie trailer, the typical book trailer is two to three minutes long and attempts to summarize the novel in a way that peaks the reader’s curiosity. Now, I know it’s not perfect but if I can do this in a few hours, just think about what I can do with a savvy agent by my side. I’m talk synergy, people.
Drop me a line and tell me what you think about the ‘Jacmuir’ book trailer. And let me know if you want to see me create one for ‘North Star’ and/or ‘South Beach’.
